What is a rose distillate/hydrosol?

It is nothing but the aromatic water produced during steam distillation of rose petals. Juicy Chemistry 100% Organic Bulgarian Rose Water is a product of primary distillation and is not a by-product of essential oil production. Hence, it contains therapeutic properties in addition to the amazing fragrance. Also, hydrosols produced via this method (and without cohobation) tend to be more expensive.

There’s no point in talking about the packaging as it has been changed now. You’ll see this product in a blue bottle as against to this amber one. Nonetheless, a pump spray packaging is apt for such kind of toners.

The brand boasts of adding no preservatives to this particular product and I was pretty sceptical about this. This product is entirely water-based and doesn’t come in a vacuum packaging. A customer can easily open the spray dispenser cap and the product can be exposed to light and air, making it more vulnerable to bacteria and mould. The worst part? Some mould might already have developed inside the bottle but you might never know because it is not transparent! (anyhow, not all bacteria, fungus, mould are visible to the naked eye)

I did a lot of research and talked with few experts to find that distilled water usually have a longer shelf life. In addition to that, rose hydrosol contains phenyl ethyl alcohol in adequate quantity to make it self preservative. But still, in cases wherein the brand can’t control how the product is being stored, they should excise caution. (My POV).

What steps can you take to make your bottle long-lasting?
  • Store it in a refrigerator.
  • Never open the spray pump cap.
  • Try to finish the product as soon as you can.

My verdict on Juicy Chemistry 100% Organic Bulgarian Rose Water:

No wonder this is possibly one of the purest rose water distillate present in the market but I cannot overlook a couple of things. The brand should advertise this (preservative-free) as a concern rather than something to be proud of. Nonetheless, rose water has its own benefits: it has excellent skin calming and soothing properties, is a wonderful astringent and works amazingly for all skin types especially oily skin. If you are in your twenties, you can definitely use this as a toner. But for me, I have started to prefer hydrating toners as my skin is becoming dehydrated quite often. I don’t see myself repurchasing this.

Please understand: Skincare is something which can’t be generalized. Some products might work well for me and not for you and vice versa. In the end, it’s all about preference.
