Identify your skin type | How to begin your skincare routine | E01

I know how intimidating it looks watching people follow 10 step skincare routine, especially when you are willing to start your own routine (but have no clue so as to where to begin). Fikar not, today I shall be guiding you how to start your own skincare routine right from a scratch. The first and foremost part before beginning a routine is to identify your skin type.

There are basically four skin types but I have extended it to seven because you have to know all of them.

Dry: If your skin feels dry, parched and flaky, tight and rough then you belong to the dry skin family. It means your skin isn’t producing enough sebum to keep itself plump.

Oily: If your skin turns oily frequently, then you belong to oily skin family. It means your skin is over-producing sebum which is resulting in an oily appearance. People with oily skin usually deal with enlarged appearance of pores around their nose.

Dehydrated: If your skin lacks hydration (means water level in the top-most layer of the skin) then you belong to the dehydrated skin family. This is usually a condition rather than skin type because the skin is not dehydrated by itself, it’s the environment, your habits or diet that causes it. You don’t need to have dry skin to have dehydrated skin. Keep in mind: dry skin lacks sebum/oil whereas dehydrated skin lacks hydration (water content).

Combination: If your T-zone i.e. your forehead, nose and chin area turns oily but other areas like cheeks are dry or normal, then you belong to combination skin family.

Sensitive: If your skin cannot tolerate frequent change of products, or you get rashes/redness pretty quickly for various reasons like going out in the sun, using a new moisturizer, etc. then your skin is sensitive. This can be due to various reasons (reactions, allergies, skin diseases, rosacea, etc).

Acne-prone: If you get acne/pimples frequently, then your skin is acne-prone.

Normal: If your skin is neither oily nor dry, is balanced and it feels comfortable, then my dear I envy you, because your skin type is normal.

Your skin can be either any of the category mentioned above OR a combination of two or even more. For eg. I have dehydrated-acne prone-oily skin.

You might be wondering what sebum is?

Sebum is nothing but skin’s natural moisturizer. It is secreted by sebaceous glands which are present in the skin and keeps the skin moisturized and plump.

You might be wondering that when our skin produces its own sebum then what is the need for applying moisture over and above it? If that question popped in your mind, then you are smart! I shall be answering this question in the E02 of this series as it is more relevant there.

So before choosing your skincare products, you must know your skin type and accordingly the products must be chosen. If you are oily skinned person and choose a heavy moisturizer (which is meant for dry flaky skin) you might end up looking like a grease ball and also might clog your pores causing terrible acne. See, how important it is to know your skin type! And don’t worry, by the end of this series, you should be able to pick up your skincare products on your own. So just have patience, we are in this together.

Now, that I’ve shared, read all the points and figure out yourself which category you belong to. If you are facing any issues, comment below, I’ll help you in figuring it out. Let’s share our results in the comments.
