How to take care of hair after smoothening/straightening?
The last post of 2019 (last but not the least)! Happy New Year 2020!
I’ve received so many messages to make a post on this topic. After 2 years of hair smoothening experience, I can definitely share some tips on how to make your hair look more manageable and lengthen the smoothening effect.
Sharing below few tips which I learned and followed during this course.
1. Use only those products that are recommended by the hairstylist
How your hair holds up after the chemical treatment (be it colouring, smoothening, keratin, etc), it highly depends upon aftercare. It is extremely advisable that you use only those products as recommended by the salon from where you got your treatment done. Other products might not be suited for that treatment and as a result, the effect may wither away soon.
2. Follow 3 step routine inevitably
Every time you shampoo always do the 3 step process i.e. Shampoo+Conditioner/mask+Serum. Make it a habit of following this and not skipping any step. Each product has it’s own importance in maintaining the shine of your hair. Apply serum on towel-dried hair when the hair is 60-70% dried.
3. Hair Combing
Even I am guilty of not combing my hair for the fear of hairfall. But this is a misconception that combing causes hairfall. Comb your hair twice a day. Chemically treated hair tends to become drier at the ends and oilier at the scalp. Combing hair will distribute that oil throughout the strands (this is called natural conditioning). You’ll notice your hair becoming less oily at the scalp and less dry at the ends. Also, combing increases blood circulation which in turn promotes hair growth.
Caution: Don’t overdo combing.
4. Deep conditioning mask
For extra nourishment, do deep masking once a month. Take your conditioner/mask and add a few drops of hair serum in it. Now apply this mixture thoroughly on hair length avoiding the scalp area. Rinse it off with plain water after half an hour or so (you can keep it longer). This will work as a deep conditioning mask and will make hair shinier and strong.
5. Avoid hard water for hair wash
Try using RO/aquaguard water at least for washing hair. Hard water is not good in the long run and makes the hair fragile. Also, it will inhibit the treatment to last long.
6. Silk pillow cover
Invest in a silk pillow cover. It reduces friction thus maintains the lustre of the hair. Your hair will automatically become shinier. If you cannot find a silk cover, try using a satin one.
7. Cover your hair
Keep your hair covered when out, especially when driving a two-wheeler. The damage done by the sun, pollution and dust is beyond imagination.
8. Avoid excessive hair cleansing
Shampoo twice a week. That is enough to get rid off the oil on the scalp. Excessive cleansing will only make the scalp and hair dry.
9. Avoid hair styling tools
Don’t use hair styling tools especially after hair straightening or smoothening. Your hair have already been modified to become straight, please don’t add stress for them by further trying to make them curl or wavy by using heat.
10. Dry hair quickly
Make sure you dry your hair as quickly as possible after washing them. The damper they stay the more damage is caused. It is even said that using a blowdry (at cold settings) causes less damage than allowing the hair to air dry naturally.
11. Avoid very hot water while hair cleansing
It is advised that you use lukewarm to cold water for hair cleansing. Hot water only messes with the moisture of hair and scalp. Always make the last rinse with cold water, it will help in sealing the moisture and make your hair shinier.
12. Avoid excessive hair oiling
I know, this point is going t make you go mad on me, but trust me. Excessive frequent oiling can also damage your hair. When you oil your air, you might have noticed that you need more shampoo to remove it. In a way, you are over-cleansing your hair which isn’t good in the long run. What I’d suggest is you oil you hair every 2-3 washes, that way you can get best of both the worlds. I’ve been oiling every 2 weeks since last 2 years and I am loving this change.
So, these were all the points that benefited me in the past 2 years hence thought of sharing them with you. If there are more, please share with us in the comments below. Most of the tips can be applied on normal untreated hair as well. So, the next time when someone asks you “how to take care of hair“, you know the answers.

I’m glad I found this post as I wanted to get smoothening done but then was skeptical about the after effects. Also I would like to add on or simply ask that we should use wooden comb right? To reduce the static charge and i guess it Should help in hairfall
